Biography

being born into the family that owned one of the largest motor companies in the world came with a lot of pressure. no matter how much her father, william, tried to tell her she had the freedom to do whatever she wanted, she could tell from the way he acted it wasn’t true. other members of the family made davina feel as if she had no other choice but to stay within the company. as the oldest (well, only) child of the oldest child, she knew what was expected of her. from an early age, her grandfather would tell her stories of how hard his family had worked to build this company and that it was her job to make sure the company grew with the changing times. because he died when she was only seven years old, most of her memories of him are related to these stories.

as she grew older, davina became more conflicted about what she wanted. her interests didn’t line up with what was needed to work for or potentially run a car company, even one that was becoming more environmentally savvy with each passing year. she enjoyed science and the outdoors and wanted to do something noble with her life, like save the planet or help others. she felt that sense of obligation to her family and a pull to follow her dreams, and that pressure eventually led to severe anxiety. even before she began high school, she began to feel she wasn’t good enough and that she was letting everyone down. her parents were quick to take notice and send her to a doctor, but not because they cared. well, they did, but only about not having a mentally unstable child. so instead of therapy, davina was prescribed numerous medications to sweep it all under the rug.

but she didn’t feel better, not really. she felt numb, like she was a zombie or like she was watching her own life happen from a distance. her parents seemed to think everything was fine, but the medication was only making things worse. davina was a shell of herself and had lost the motivation to try. her grades began to suffer, and a special conference was set up between her teachers and her parents. the school, reasonably, tried to place blame on the parents, but william and pauline couldn’t accept that. they were good parents, doing everything they could for their daughter.

it was on the drive home that things took a turn for the worse. her parents were so focused on lecturing their daughter that they didn’t see the car coming into their lane until it was too late. davina came out of the crash with a broken collarbone and a concussion, but her parents were not as lucky. she was later told that william died on impact and that pauline died from complications in surgery later that night. and because of her medication, she didn’t feel any emotions about it until she was weaned off of it.

with nowhere else to go, she moved in with her uncle marcus, who seemed to immediately understand where his brother had gone wrong. he talked to davina, and, more importantly, listened to her. within months, she was in therapy and off of the medications that had turned her into the walking dead. she was coping with the loss of her parents and how they had gaslighted her. she had put her life back on track, and her she was able to work her way into the top ten of her class. she was somewhere close to happy and no longer felt as if she needed to follow in the family’s footsteps. global warming was a growing hot topic when she graduated high school, so davina decided she was going to save the planet. and fortunately, she was accepted into mit and was able to remain close to home. she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in earth sciences in 2014 and in 2016 with a master’s in geophysics.

she came out of college with a lot of job prospects in an array of fields and soon accepted a job as a seismologist. it’s not what her parents would have wanted for her, but that’s something that will always make davina feel as if she made the right decision.

Polaris Lorna Dane was orphaned only weeks after her birth when her parents supposedly died in a plane crash. She was adopted by the Danes, a couple who claimed to be her mother's sister and brother-in-law, and did not learn of her adoption or the fate of her birth parents until she was nearly twenty years old.

Lorna had been born with green hair, which she always kept dyed brown so that she would not be seen as "different." Lorna’s hair color was the only outward sign of her latent genetic potential for magnetic powers, but certain genetic factors were absent which would have allowed her to exercise those powers. In the normal course of events, Lorna would never have been able to use these powers. However, the intervention of Samuel "Starr" Saxon, the master roboticist whose brain patterns were later preserved in the Machinesmith, altered the normal course of events. Saxon had constructed an android duplicate of Magneto, the self-styled mutant master of magnetism who was believed dead at the time, and a small army of androids with strange powers called the Demi-Men. Saxon's plans were to use these androids as his means of accumulating vast wealth and power, while deceiving the world into believing them to be examples of evil mutants, who had become objects of widespread fear.
